The Design Process
1. Concept Development
Do you have a clear concept? If you do you’re ready to move forward. If you need help we can offer ideas and feedback.
Before designing, it’s crucial to have a clear vision for your notebook. Think about who it’s for, its purpose, and the type of content it should contain. Consider what chapters or sections it might include and whether there are any specific page types (e.g., goal-setting spreads, habit trackers, reflection pages). Having reference materials, such as examples of existing journals you like, can be extremely helpful in shaping the direction.
2. Journal Structure & Content
Is your content planned, structured, and organized? If not we can help you with this process, ensuring it’s ready for the design stage.
This is the most important stage — design brings content to life, but content is the foundation. Your notebook’s structure should be mapped out in detail, including the number of pages, their order, and the type of content on each page. To simplify this, we’ve developed a straightforward system for customers to plan out their entire notebook format.
While we can provide feedback and insights, it’s best if you’ve worked through most of this beforehand to ensure a smooth process.
3. Brand Guidelines & Visual Direction
Already have brand guidelines? We’ll apply them seamlessly. Or if you need help we can create a mood board or brand guidelines.
If you’re an established brand, simply providing brand guidelines (logo, fonts, colors, and design elements) is enough for us to ensure consistency. If you don’t have brand guidelines, there are three options:
- Low-cost: You provide a mood board with references, color palettes, and ideas.
- Mid-cost: You provide a broad brief, and we create a mood board with design concepts.
- High-cost: We develop full brand guidelines as a separate service. If you’re interested in this, get in touch to discuss the details.
4. Final Design & Production
With everything in place, we create your notebook.
Sample spreads → Feedback → Final design → Ready for production.
Once all the above is finalized, we begin the actual design process. We start by designing between 2-8 spreads to establish the styling, layout, and visual language. This allows for feedback and refinement before any significant time or cost is spent on full production. Once the style is approved, we move on to designing a full section of the notebook, ensuring the structure works as intended. Finally, the entire notebook is designed, incorporating all refinements before being sent to print.
